I approach my abstract art with a devotion to the textures and colors of Italian influence: the patina on old buildings from centuries of paint, sun, weather, the alchemy of life. Venice is quite amazing when the sun hits the water which reflects on ancient architecture, creating colors that are a mystery! They have a name and a story which are impossible to define. I want my paintings to have a bit of that magic.
These paintings are distinct, color wise, from my other abstract paintings. The origin was a collaboration with an interior design company and were part of a living area display commission. I received more requests for this color palette and it turned into a series of paintings.
Asian aesthetics are also a wonderful resource for the decorative arts which I love to pair with large abstract paintings.
With a degree in art history, I am very influenced by iconography through the ages. Religious symbolism, gold leaf, and colorful decorative adornment have been an irrepressible tool to capture the spiritual and emotional hearts of man since the beginning of time. I often use color copies of Renaissance and Medieval works..along with symbols of Asian icons, to center on the canvas to incorporate with gold leaf, stencils, texture and layers of color to complete the project. From studying man's desire and need to create,..as far back as cave paintings, we learn art is imperative, essential, a life force of it's own.
La Pera! I have painted so many, colorful and delicious. Here are just a few to show both Italian and Asian influences. Layers and layers of paint, sometimes applied in the style of ancient frescoes. They are some of my most time consuming projects, but worth the effort for the final result is luminous. Buon Appetito!
Italy. My first trip was in 1972, it changed my life forever! There to study painting and art history through a college program, I had my first glimpse of the duomo, the sights and sounds of Florence, and art! Art from centuries and centuries of history. I was in love.
It seemed there were even colors I had not seen before! There is so much power in color, it has the ability to bring joy, rest, emotion, even healing. Color is a divine gift, and it has driven me through this artistic journey all of these years. I can not remember a time in my life when I was not moved by beautiful color. I will forever be grateful for that first view of Firenze, and for the time I have been able to study and visit there through the years.
My artwork is showcased now at Kramer & Walker Curated Living. Please visit my Facebook page for details.
